Treatment Of Other Conditions

This section is designed to give a brief overview of conditions that have been successfully treated by Dr Pardoe, which do not involve pain as their primary symptom or if pain does not derive from an obvious muscular cause.

This list is not complete- many other conditions may be appropriately treated using acupuncture- if you wish to discuss your particular condition call Dr Pardoe to discuss on mobile 07973 845770.

Some of the conditions listed are very challenging to treat using acupuncture alone. It is common to work with the patients normal specialist- acupuncture can be considered “complementary” rather than “alternative” i.e. the acupuncture complements the existing treatment, rather than seeking to replace it.

Pain From Non Muscular Causes
  • Cancer pain

  • Trigeminal neuralgia

  • Post herpetic neuralgia (Shingles pain)

Skin Conditions

  • Psoriasis- this condition is particularly challenging to treat and results are frequently disappointing. Please discuss first with Dr Pardoe.

  • TMJ dysfunction (painful chewing/ jaw joint)

  • Bell’s palsy

  • Trigeminal neuralgia

  • Acute anxiety

  • Chronic anxiety states

  • Poor sleep pattern

  • Chest wall pain (post operative pain)

Other Conditions

  • Pain of “idiopathic” or unknown cause

Respiratory
  • Asthma (this is particularly challenging to treat)

Infectious Disease
  • Chronic bacterial infection e.g. infected leg ulcers

  • Mild immune impairment of unknown cause

Addictions
  • Smoking

  • Opiate addiction

  • Weight loss- this has been a point of much discussion. Dr Pardoe only rarely treats patients for weight loss.

Conditions NOT Suitable For Acupuncture

The following conditions are NOT appropriate for routine treatment with acupuncture. In exceptional circumstance, treatment of these conditions may be attempted, but almost always as an additional treatment rather than a sole treatment and in conjunction with other specialists.

  • HIV

  • Serious infectious disease e.g. TB, Pneumonia, Septicaemia.

  • Cancer of all forms- however the pain associated with cancer may frequently be treated

  • Severe nervous system disease e.g. Parkinsons disease, Senile Dementia Motor Neurone Disease, and spinal cord lesions

  • Psychotic illness (e.g. paranoid delusional psychosis, schizophrenia, depression associated with psychosis)

  • Epilepsy

  • Disease or accident that has destroyed nerves- acupuncture requires an intact nervous system to function effectively.

This list is obviously not exhaustive- acupuncture is not a panacea, it cannot be realistically expected to successfully treat all diseases. However when used appropriately, especially to treat pain and painful conditions results can be excellent.
